Thanks Platt,

Yes, some of what I read of his first book brought me pause along the same
lines, but I'm still attracted to the idea of getting a quick and broad feel
for figures whose lives I've not really studied in depth.

I think there is a little bit of "knock 'em off the ole pedestal" in us all,
but if taking that factor into account, and not swallowing the author's
conclusions completely, one can still derive a great deal of value from such
a work.  You get the  common narrative from a different angle, you see the
complete picture ( or more complete at least).

And side-swipes at pompous intellectualism is always fun.
