Hi All,

I was reading about rogue waves today.

http://folk.uio.no/karstent/waves/index_en.html

These are large waves that appear out of nowhere. They are not understood
and are under research. Even quantum physics is being used to study them in
terms of nonlinear focussing. I thought this may be a good metaphor for the
great religions. They could in fact be considered rogue waves. A lot of
time is spent analyzing the cultural and physical roots of such religions,
trying to explain them in an anthropological settings by cause and effect.
Perhaps this is the wrong approach. Perhaps it is not so accessible
through rational linear thought. Phaedrus tried to deliver against the
Church of Reason. Quantum physics is not rational, so maybe many of these
spiritually converted scientists will produce a model.

I often see the levels of Quality as some kind of harmonization of
underlying tendencies. The fact that it takes the components of a human
brain to bring about our personal consciousness, when the individual
components (nerves and such) are nothing special in themselves. What is it
about this conglomeration of communicating cells that creates such
consciousness? I don't think the answer lies in dissecting corpses, or in
NMR studies, or in brain wave analysis. However, this is not to say that a
representative model could not be constructed which has meaning. I know
this is a vicious cycle, the brain understanding itself. But now I am
thinking of rogue waves and what they represent.

Cheers,
Mark
