Adrie,
I disagree with at least one key assumption you're making. And a concluse
that it's "needless to comment".

Septic tanks can be very important. Mine for instance. I live on the edge
of the San Juan diggins. At one time, hydraulic cannons tore open the
earth, washing away the gravel and clay, so that gold could be brought out
and spent.
The industrial system grew and grew. spawning wonders such as the Pelton
Wheel and long distance phone networks. And then one day, something brand
new. The world's first environmental regulation. Their mining detritus
washed down and flooded the farmers in marysville - who'd been building up
captal of their own in the form of crops and orchards that produced food for
the mines. These farmers had enough clout to get a federal judge to decide
their case, and pass a ruling that what you do affects those downstream,
then you gotta stop.
So they stopped. Especially when they knew the judge's inspectors were
coming up the hill, and for this, they used those new long distance phone
lines for the purpose. Just like I'm telling you stuff you might not have
known right now, using a further development of long distance communication.
I got my house cheap, but it was built a long time ago. Septic systems were
basically just an extension of the ole two-holer outhouse, with a flush
toilet carrying the waste out of the house and into a concrete-lined pit,
right next to the bathroom.
within a ten foot radius, two trees grow. A huge ponderosa pine and an
enormous oak. The oak has actually grown up around and cradles the back
half of my house, - or at least the addition that stick out over the edge -
my bedroom. And the pine is an incredible thing to see, coming out about
six feet from the bank, it's roots and trunk extending out into a space and
so huge that people gasp when they see it. Both trees have root systems that
anchor the bank and keep it from eroding, as well as supporting many
medium-sized and young madrones - water-loving trees.
When we moved in, we weren't sure how long that tenuous clay bank would
hold. In strong winds and rainy days, I'd worry. But no more. Now the
trees have gotten so healthy and big, that I don't worry anymore. I would
worry if I stopped "watering" them tho. It's the effluent from my septic
tank, right at the top of that hill, which has created so much strength and
held that bank and our house and my neighbor's house from sliding down to
the bottom of the diggins with the rest of the un-needed silt and debris.
I want to keep that bathroom, just like it is, and add another that
distributes down the hill, in raised beds and greenhouses. I have the
engineering all figured, the hole for the tank all dug and covered
temporarily, and if they won't let me do it, then fine. I'll use the place
for storage. Or the bank can have it and I'll rent it back from them and
then sue them for the living conditions.

Well, you'll have to take that up with Marsha. I didn't post it to this
list, but I did need another perspective on the issue of whether I'm
polluting MD with my postings. Personally, I don't mind "airing my shit" in
this context, because I've had a lot of intellectual analysis of this shit
disposal system of mine - which has led to the development of my corollary
(and that's a GOOD thing) to Krimel's Noble Truth (shit happens)

I can't see there's any real conflict. There's such a disparity of
worldview that we just go whooshing past each other eternally. No collision
possible.
Whoosh!
