[Platt]
While reading a review of "The History of Beauty" by Umberto Eco, I
came across the following:

[Arlo]
Eco is an insightful scholar, and I believe that his writings on
Peirce's notion of "abduction" tie in very cleanly with Pirsig's
comments on hypothesis creation (and later the notion of
pre-intellectual awareness of Quality), which itself mentions
parallels to Einstein and Poincare.

Although (IMO) his thoughts on both "beauty" and "ugliness" rely too
exclusively on their historical trajectory in Western cultures, the
overall theme(s) he presents should resonate with those familiar with
Pirsig's works (I wouldn't say its an mirror match).

You may find this online lecture he gave "On the History of Ugliness"
interesting (and its free).
