Back to my earlier example:
Suppose we raise an infant in a controlled laboratory environment, where there are
surfaces of various temperature. The infant will naturally recoil from surfaces that
are too cold or too hot. Suppose that when the infant comes in contact with surfaces
in the range of 70-72 degrees F, that we immediately apply an electric shock.
Eventually the infant will automatically recoil from surfaces in the 70-72 degree F
range to avoid the electric shock it has learned will follow. This is a paradigmatic
example of CONDITIONED behavior.
