1) Biological patterns tend towards an increase in complexity over time.
2) :. There were less complex biological patterns before there were more 
complex ones.

If you are referring to human activity in 1, then...

1) Social patterns evolved from biological patterns.
2) :. There were biological patterns before there were social patterns.

Onward.

3) There were no intellectual patterns before there were 
biological/social patterns.
4) :. Biological patterns are not intellectual patterns.
