Marsha,

my long reply is hung up still, but I realize I forgot to address this:

I think I wrote that - at least I wrote something very close to it. In
the context I think the reverse order was okay; but, as excerpted, I
would say that the 'care' should always come last - and the 'don't care'
first. I'm pretty sure that was how I stated it the first time I
broached this (and that you have properly excerpted from the second).

And, to be sure, the don't care is a provincial 'don't care', but such
provincialism is toward the SOM side of the spectrum; while the 'care'
is a non-provincial 'care', up to which I strive to hold myself.
Cynicism would be to cast off the 'care'. But I can't cast off the
'don't care', because that would be to relegate myself to subservience
to the other (dmb was the object of the original); it would be to say
that I can't get on properly if the other maintains a false impression
of me.

Whatever the other wants to make me to be is their bag, it won't bother
me. Still, I think it would be *better* if they didn't distort me to
absurdity. So I try, but failure won't hold (the provincial) me back.
