I think this is made way to complicated. When Pirsig stated that we
all know what Quality is, he was not pointing to the intellectual
knowing of such. He was pointing towards the intuitive knowing. The
intellect only subverts such knowing with symbols representing truth.
It is quite possible that we make choices before we intellectualize
the choices. So, I would say that what is wrong is that we want to be
right in the eyes of others. We need justification, so we create an
elaborate web of something that is simply second nature, beyond the
symbolic intellect. This is the impact of the social level on the
intellectual level.

I think this is the danger of intellectual patterns, that Pirsig
discusses. Perhaps this is one thing Phaedrus saw which stripped him
of meaning, requiring shock treatment as is discussed in ZMM. When we
are so used to truth and find that there is something deeper, it can
be somewhat debilitating. It takes a while to build meaning back up,
as is also discussed in ZMM. Such meaning can arrive at a narrow path
as described in Lila, but there are many paths. The qualities of
which lend meaning without truth.

Cheers,
Mark
