Before I met Lu and was living out of the back of my truck, I had a
house-sitting gig that involved taking care of an orphaned fawn. For a
while, I had to try and be a mama deer. I was into running in those days,
and thus it was quite an experience jogging along forested paths with a fawn
shadowing me. I tried to instill a fear of humans into her, by running away
and hiding whenever I heard or smelled a stranger on the trails. I don't
know how successful I was, but I hope she made it safe from poachers and
raised babies and I've got adopted deer grandchildren and
great-grandchildren out there in the world.
And oh yeah, she sure loved to eat dry dog food.
