Steve said to Dan:
> Newton had Bacon, Darwin had Huxley, and Jesus had Paul of Tarsus who
> managed to take a wise man's teaching in response to persecution and
> turn it into a religion which itself became a tool of persecution.
> Heretics must be dealt with and harshly. There is no room for parallel
> valid interpretations. There can be only one answer to every question,
> and it must be phrased in the words chosen by the Bulldog--a
> narcissist who can only stomach hearing his own words parroted back to
> him. All other phrasings even of pretty much the same notions are
> heresies which must be expunged before they spread.

An artist friend of mine likes to draw fictional animals that are composites of several different species. She gives them a mythical, fairy-tale look that's really very charming. She''ll combine any creatures you want. The kids love it. I'm going to ask her to do one for me; a combination of bulldog and parrot. I'll hang it over my desk, on my wall of ego.

If you're genuinely interested in narcissism, there is a very fun way to learn about it; listen to Marc Maron's podcast. It's called "What the Fuck?". Basically, it's a comedian talking to comedians about comedy and how the biz works. As it happens, almost everybody in show biz is a raging narcissist, including Marc Maron. He'll be first one to admit it. The funny thing is, narcissism isn't one bit funny to the people who suffer from it. It's a very painful sort of neurosis that effects every moment of one's life. Take the normal insecurities and self-loathing that we all know and crank it up a few notches. Any difference of opinion or disagreement is perceived as a deeply painful insult, as a form of persecution, as a personal attack on their value as human being. By all accounts, it's not fun. But Marc Maron is brilliant and hilarious.
