I agree with your thoughts.
Outside of the social level words have no meaning. We are able to grunt in complex ways. Some grunts provide us with more meaning than others. Meaning exists outside of words.
I am sure that the different howls of a coyote carry meaning for the coyote. We are the same. We build very complex beehives, but to the bee we are just the environment. It is useful for me to raise everything else up to our level. It gives everything meaning, even the photon, which for me is the grandest of all. And, yes, even the photon has free will. It explains so much for me.
Pirsig himself states that everything has free will, we are no different.
