Hey Arlo,
Matt said:
But there are significant differences between [Nietzsche, Hegel and
Pirsig], and it would help clarify Pirsig's position in cultural history to
see how it was different than his predecessors.
Arlo said:
I think such a cultural-historical analysis is outside my ability. I
haven't read much Hegel, and as I said I am by no means an expert
in Nietzsche.
Matt:
Don't let the grandiosity of some of my labels and pigeon-holes
mislead: I think we, as amateurs, can do well within our abilities that
which professionals do. Even if our work amounts to sign-posts, so
much of the best work out there amounts to sign-posts for further
thought. Sign-posts are what static latches are, and that's the best
we can hope for anyways.
People, like you Arlo, are the closest thing to experts on Pirsig that
there are. We don't need to be luminaries on other philosophers or
figures, because if our leading goal is to illuminate Pirsig, then that's
where our special position gives us the lead on.
Matt
