Hi Marsha,
Thanks so much. It is good to have an electronic copy that I can
search through.
My comments concerning your use of unsupported quotes was simply
rhetoric. Since I do not seem to be getting anywhere in understanding
your metaphysics through that method, I will humbly drop it. I often
have difficulty in figuring out why you present one quote or another,
but I can live with that.
In my opinion, as readers we bring words to life, since they are
static representations on a page, and as such have no meaning in and
of themselves. I do not often use quotes, but if I do, they are used
at the beginning or end of an opinion of mine, and typically are
presented as a better way of displaying, in words, than I am able to
do. However, the quoted words are lifeless unless I explain why they
are meaningful to me. But that is just me.
So, I will respectfully stop asking you to explain your ideas on the
quote, and I apologize if my posts to you seemed somewhat arrogant.
That is not how I wish to present myself.
For me, Alan Watts is more significant than Pirsig in the development
of my thinking along such lines. He was a talented person who was
able to create enlightening analogies of what Eastern philosophies
meant in Western terms. We need more like him.
I find that I learn more from him if I listen to his lectures. I love
the way he laughs at some of his incongruities, and the way he
emphasizes and pauses between certain words. Words are words, and how
they are verbally said makes a big difference for my understanding how
a speaker is using them. Something was lost when we switched from
verbal traditions such as story telling around a fire, to putting
everything into books. I always come away with more when I speak
directly with someone, rather than read what they have written. This
is true in scientific publications, where there is more to the
scientists thinking than what is presented in a publication. The
internet has only strengthened the power of the written word, and we
now interact through a keyboard rather than face to face. I try to at
least do both on a 50:50 basis.
Thanks again,
Mark
