Kind thanks to all the respondents for your help, insights, support, and
reassurance.  You have helped me to understand that I'm not the utter dunce
for finding this issue troublesome.  You have assured me that opinions and
understandings on the matter are diverse and often confrontational.  What
this means to me is that I'm not going to be able to beat Part 2 of my essay
into submission and conformity.  So I've decided to go forward with it
provisionally and try to reconcile it later.  Thanks again to everyone.
