Hi Matt
I would hope that my comment in my announcement "...please abide by the
spirit of the rules as well as the words" would be seen as key to what
you are asking.
Most of the members of MD behave like adults and are interested in
discussing Robert Pirsig's MoQ - that's the reason why this forum exists
- but there are a few here who have their own agenda or who believe that
rules are for other people or who wish to share each and every thought
that pops into their head etc.. This just makes for a tedious and, more
often than not, repetitive stream of posts saying the same thing over
and over or post after post of drivel.
The rules of MD were put in place quite a while back (nearly 15 years
ago) to try and stop some of the excesses that were occurring then. They
shouldn't have been necessary then and they should be even less
necessary now but because of the nature of interaction on the Internet
they do serve a useful purpose which is why I shall be enforcing them. I
could have added a whole bunch more in the intervening years (like don't
post for members who have been removed, don't cross-post from other
lists etc. etc.) but considered that they are common sense and that most
people would only need a written nudge to change. I've tried to keep the
rules as broad and as few as possible to facilitate an open exchange of
ideas about Pirsig's MoQ - but if any member wants to play silly games
I'll remove them anyway.
All I'm saying above is that reasonable, adult behaviour - which is the
basis for good manners and civility - and the ability to think and
express yourself clearly and rationally should be the guiding forces
behind being a member of this forum. It really is that easy.
You, me and the majority of members of MD are here to discuss Pirsig's
MoQ in a reasonable and civil way and if some wish to try and spoil that
environment I will deal with them as and when I think it's necessary. As
Dave Buchanan has said (to paraphrase), you don't need to agree with
every word Pirsig has written but you do need to understand the basics
of what Pirsig has said. Those who wish to remain ignorant of that or
ignore what Pirsig has said quite plainly or are just looking for a
fight can go join another list and behave however they want because they
aren't welcome here. It just ain't gonna happen on this list any longer!
I hope that answers your question.
Cheers
