Marsha said to DMB March 16th 2013:

"In LILA, I didn't think the Captain, Rigel or Lila were very attractive characters. The best aspect of the book, I thought, was the metaphysics."

Ant McWatt comments:

Marsha,

I thought the idol (the discarded doll of Lila's that Phaedrus gives a burial to) at the end of LILA is quite a character though.  (As we discovered on my recent visit, the audio version of Pirsig's second book really brings out its cynical, dark humour.  It provides a nice summary of the story as well).

Moreover, the Captain's boat (which represents the inorganic level of the MOQ) is also, according to Pirsig at least, a certain aspect of his own character (as Phaedrus, Rigel and Lila all are).  However, with people naturally tending to be human-centric rather than Quality-centric, they tend to overlook good old Arete (not that I think the name of the boat is actually given) when reading the book.

Best wishes,

Ant
