Ian and Ant,
I remember reading an article in the paper once, I think it was the
Sacramento Bee, about a sociological study of gang dynamics and what the guy
discovered was that the leader of the gang was not necessarily the biggest,
or the strongest or meanest, but the leader was often the one who could spin
a meaningful story about the gang's existence. His skill at weaving the
individual's lives into a larger framework was what controlled the gang.
Thus illustrating the MoQ truth that social narrative trumps the law of the
jungle.
Boyd seems to me to also tie in to Royce's explication of the significance
of evolution as proof that narrative is the prime constiuent of reality.
