What Jerry was saying was that at the time in his life when he was
oscillating back and forth between joining in with the group thing, and
doing his own art, he had a long drive with Neal at the Wheel, and something
in that encounter - even though it was a quiet trip, surprisingly, showed
him that this man, Neal, had taken the dynamic as far as any individual
possibly could.  And somehow, it isn't enough.  An individual just can't
possibly be as dynamic as a group.

Jerry went on with his group to great wealth and fame, Neal went on to die
by himself on those San Miguel tracks and left his family penniless and
bitter.

So on the empirical evidence, I'd say Jerry made a wise choice in the
moment.
