Perhaps you'll recall that Pirsig cautioned us not
to take his Johnny-come-lately definition of intellect as a "Papal Bull.

And I think that Mr. Pirsig was very kind (and humble) in suggesting 
this for obvious reasons ( all is 'provisional) but you Platt, and 
Bodvar are belittling and distorting his efforts immediately! Consider 
what you say next:

intellectual level that was "screwing everything up," hardly a result of a
"manipulation of language-derived symbols" unless you include everything
humankind has done since its inception as "screwing everything up."

Andre:
Where does Mr. Pirsig talk about a 'manipulation of LANGUAGE derived symbols'?? Read the letter again Platt and whilst you are at it, read also the section that starts with: 'Just when the evolution of the intellectual level from the social level took place in history can only be speculated on'.
