Who said so? It may have been said but it's nonsense, the Stone 
Agers were as intelligent as ourselves,  but none of their cultures were 
intellectual. A culture may be have social value as its upper layer or 
the intellectual, in case of the  latter it is on top of the social layer, but 
that does not make it a social-intellectual culture. It's the upper that 
counts.

Your "exasperated" tone begins to wear thin, You and Arlo don't (dare) 
face the argument that no level below intellect has any "regional" 
versions, why would intellect be an exception? Patterns, yes, and mark 
you, those mentioned in LILA - democracy, freedom of press & 
speech, independent judicial system ...etc - are all "objective-over-
subjective"   nothing about ( for example) despotism or cannibalism 
being intellectuals pattern  .... which they must be if cultures are "a 
combination of social & intellectual patterns of value".

In the PT letter Pirsig affirms the SOL by "no use postulating an 
intellectual level before the Greeks" (= SOM in a Q context) and this 
was no polite gesture, He then went on to speak about a non-S/O 
"oriental intellect", but if THAT was the Upanishads era (as he claims)  
it is was an era of philosophy which is a search for objective truth 
(except religious philosophy which is a self-contradiction) And  his 
"..the intellectual level has bothered me too". Sheer benevolence? You 
won't get off the hook that easy Andre.
