... there is unanimous agreement amongst all indigenous cultures that death is
not the end. but maybe they are all just primitive morons (like most americans,
english and aussies).
[arlo]
like joseph campbell (whom you cited), i don't think there is anything
primatively moronic about indigenous cultures. like us, they attempted to
formulate a metaphorical description to explain the world around them. in many
ways i find much of what they advanced as more... well, advanced than modern
day religion. to quote a favorite passage, they understood what it meant to "be
a part of the world", something sorely lacking in today's population.
[gav]
david lynch's twin peaks tv series is one of the best modern creations that trys
to get a handle on heaven and earth (and places in between) and how they might
interact. best TV drama series ever!!
[arlo]
"damn good coffee... and HOT!". :-) long time american fans of twin peaks have
raison d'celebre this autumn, when the boxed set (including the two hour pilot)
finally arives. notice that lynch relies heavily on native american
mythological references. and they had a "horse" too (michael horse played
deputy hawk).

it is simply a ruse to attract chicks (hey that morose looking guy over by the
bar is so deep and dark, and i love his black skivvy)...
[arlo]
is this a bad place to say i dig the sisters of mercy?
[gav]
this being so it must to some extent be tolerated. but on the moq fora it has no
place because 1. there ain't many chicks. 2. sexual intercourse is difficult
through a modem.
[arlo]
the freudian in me wants to make a comment about subcontextual meaning. lonely
tonight, gav?
[gav]
why are uni people the dumbest of all.....now there's an interesting thesis
topic.....
[arlo]
ah, see, now you're just being mean. there is plenty of dumbness to go around, i
see more than my fair share of it at those stadium "hallelujah" events. but i
venture you'll win the hearts of those who make a living attacking the academy,
villifying professors, soapboxing about it being a giant den of "liberal
perversity".
but whereas some see the academy sliding into the abyss because of "liberalism",
i see its slide originating from an abandonment of "liberal education" (in the
classic sense) and a continual move towards a capistocratic business model,
where it becomes nothing more than a large trade school... churning out kiddies
who can earn a living, but don't know what it means to live. to go back to that
fav quote, we teach people how to control the world, but not what it means to
be a part of it.
step one. make ZMM required reading for all incoming freshman.
[gav]
woooah there gav....disappearing up your own cosmic arse mate.
