DMB, at least we're on the right subject now ... perhaps we should
start another thread ...

Be sure, there is no way the moderate middle-ground is atractive
because it's somehow "nicer" - some wishy-washy-liberal preference. In
fact characterising it as "playing things down the middle" misses the
point. We expose the issue.

The excluded middle is not some comprimised average of two extreme
views, it's a whole set of different (higher quality) opportunities -
excluded by, drowned out by the "noise" of, concentrating on the
extremes. (I have a great quote from Mary Parker-Follett on that, if I
can find it. It's about resolving conflict, not, I repeat not,
avoiding conflict.)

We agree on the conflict, our disagreement is resolution tactics.
Hence my Sun Tzu reference.
Let's come back to this in a separate thread.

On your "theist" question, since you ask.
I'm atheist as you know, but how about versions of theism which
acknowledge the mystical metaphorical value of the idea of "god", but
don't prescribe its literal authority outside the spiritual realm.
