     The code of art comes into play here.  The
observed and observer are based on assumptions,
intellectual ones.  The observed is based on SOM.  The
observer is assuming SOM fits in here.  Pirsig is
saying rid the assumptions and 'go with' what the slit
experiment is doing and don't question what it is
doing, don't be surprised.  The codification of
quantum physics into an intellectual understanding,
not based on SOM, takes a code of art perspective. 
This is basically what I hear Pirsig saying here.
