Hasn't Pirsig expressed the difference you seek?  Minds are to collective
consciousness (= the huge body of common knowledge) as cells are to the body.

Its an analogy that only goes halfway. If it was simply a matter of our
individual minds working collectively to form a collective consciousness, that
would be one thing. But our minds do more than create this thing passively, our
minds also assimilate it. They both create (collectively) and contain the
collective patterns so described.
