Do you feel that if culture includes business it is possible to "distinguish"
them?

[Erin]
Yes. A circus includes a clown show but I would not equate it to the clown
show.

[Arlo]
Fair enough. Although I'd say that the clown show adopts the values of the
circus, or maybe the clown is drawn to the circus because of the values the
circus professes. Would you say there is enough difference between the values
of the clown show and the values of the circus to distinguish these sets of
value? Would you disagree that the values of the circus at the very least
"shape" the values of the clown show?

[Arlo previously]
You went on saying, "Maybe your quickness to equate them is by your Marxist
attitude of "money is the measure of man". I'm still waiting for
some type of intelligent support of this statement.

[Erin]
Personal observation.

[Arlo]
Based on what? Your reading of ... ?

[Arlo previously]
where we differentiate what we do for "work" and what we do for "enjoyment".
"Labor", to Marx, covers both.

[Erin]
Then Marx isn't doing it right.

[Arlo]
Okay. So you feel then that the motive to engage in "work" activity and the
motive to engage in "enjoyment" activity are NOT artificial, and that there are
naturally different motivators for these different activities? Do you agree,
then, that without "profit" there would be no "work" activity? Do you do what
you do (for a job) because of "profit"? Keep in mind that I am fully aware that
one HAS to earn money in a money economy if one is to exist. So look at the
question this way, if you didn't need the money, would you continue to "work"
at your job? At all? Also,is "motive" the only difference between work activity
and enjoyment activity?

And, I'm curious, can you fill in your final thoughts with what Erin does?

Platt admires the Victorians.
In contrast Arlo offers the more progressive ideas of the Amish.
And Erin...

Platt likes to talk business.
In contrast Arlo likes to talk labor.
And Erin...

While talking politics with Platt could be prefaced with "Welcome to Vietnam"
In contrast talking politics with Arlo could be prefaced with "Welcome to the
Superbowl".
And Erin...

Platt likes to talk about the ideas of "the individual"
In contrast Arlo would prefer to talk about the less selfish ideas of "the
independent"
And Erin...
