Ian,

Just a quick note.  About the rhetoric thing, I'd be careful with the 
"rhetoric is just as relevant as logic" formulation.  It strikes me as 
Aristotelian, in that Plato ripped on rhetoric for not being dialectic/logic 
and then Pirsig traces Aristotle's response to be putting the two side by 
side.  Pirsig's response in ZMM is to point out that logic is a function of 
rhetoric, making rhetoric roughly coextensive with writing, speaking, 
thinking.
