Hi Mark,
The line where Ant says:
"A complete transcript of the interview doesn't really
exist..." is in the following post:
http://lists.moqtalk.org/pipermail/moq_discuss-moqtalk.org/2006-October/006636
.html
Ant is not saying that a transcript does not exist,
he's just saying that one with the social niceties
included isn't available. I don't know why he bothered
to mention this, but apparently it's caused you
confusion.
Mark 5-11-06: Hello Glenn.
Yes, it has caused me confusion. I wasn't asking about it.
Julian wrote: 'Thanks. I thought Anthony McWatt has posted it on
robertpirsig.org - or
at least the full transcript. I suggest you contact him. Cheers Julian'
I asked Anthony why the interview wasn't where it should be, not where i
could find it because it wasn't where it should be?
Julian tells me he thought it was already on robertpirsig.org. What gave him
that idea? Simple: that was the intended arrangement.
Anthony tells me where it is and provides a link, but why isn't it on
robertpirsig.org?
Answer: Because it doesn't really exist.
The only transcript i'm interested in is the one that should be on
robertpirsig.org, and that certainly does exists; Anthony has just provided a link to
it.
Glenn:
You'll see that higher up in the same post
he puts a link to the transcript where it's hosted on
TPM. If you follow that link it should lead you to the
same transcript that Baggini attached to the email he
sent you.
Mark 5-11-06: And this transcript should have been placed on
robertpirsig.org when Baggini sent it to Anthony.
Glenn:
I'm not sure Ant was that clear when he described how
the interview was conducted. Since Pirsig only
entrusts a few people with his email address, Baggini
not being one of them, Baggini had to send the
questions to Anthony, and then Anthony forwarded them
to Pirsig. The answers were funneled back to Baggini
in the reverse direction.
The TPM Jan 2006 edition had an article by Baggini
about the interview and it was available on the web by
Jan 11. It stayed up for about 3 months and was
removed when the next edition came out. moq.org links
to this and that's why it no longer works. The
transcript of the interview (which was separate from
the article) was also made available on the web at the
same time and it's still available. Links to it are
available from my moq site (home.comcast.net/~moq/)
and Matt Kundert's blog
(pirsigaffliction.blogspot.com/)
Mark 5-11-06: I find it incredulous that Pirsig material is available on at
least two sites which are not MOQ.org or robertpirsig.org.
This interview was born and left to fend for itself without any help from
the very people one would expect to keep it archived.
For years people have been providing Horse with Pirsig related material dug
up from forgotten sources which has then been proudly included on MOQ.org for
the benefit of those, like me, who snap up everything they can get their
hands on.
Look how that has changed. Why has it changed in this instance?
Glenn:
In early January, the news page at robertpirsig.org
promised to put up the transcript of the Baggini
interview "within the week", and Baggini's main
article noted that the transcript would take up
residence there as well. January ended with no
transcript being posted and the news page for
February, which came out before January ended, no
longer included the teaser. By Feb 3, the
MOQSummary.html page appeared on robertpirsig.org. It
consisted of excerpts taken from the interview solely
from Pirsig's side of the discussion. At the time, I
believe this page made mention of TPM and Baggini in
the introductory remarks, but these were removed at
some later time.
Mark 5-11-06: If these events are correct it would appear there may have
been a programme of concealment.
Glenn:
Ian, who was helping to mediate a discussion with Ant
at the time, reported that posting the transcript was
not a high priority item with Ant and that he had
plenty of other more pressing things to do.
Mark 5-11-06: Anthony's immediate response to my question was to provide a
link to the material required. No concealment there.
Anthony's reasons for not placing this material on robertpirsig.org, which
was my original question, are questionable.
If Anthony was busy, all he had to do was include the article provided by
Julian: Anthony stated on the 1-11-06, '...the MOQ Summary... ...did take
considerable time to prepare...' so any suggestion that he, '...had plenty of
other more pressing things to do...,' rather than place the article as provided
by Baggini on robertpirsig.org, is daft. That's a bit like saying, 'I haven't
got time to buy a cake, so i shall bake one instead.'
Glenn:
I hope this clears some things up. You are welcome to
post this if you'd like.
Glenn
Mark 5-11-06: Thanks. You've provided some interesting information.
Love,
Mark
