People all over the globe perpetuate injustice and immorality because it is
a habituated (ahem) activity, and to do otherwise would constitute a
self-reflective criticism they are incapable of. 

We create (it seems) as adults the lives we were given as children.

Yes and look at the past 40 years of cultural change in race relations in
this country. Here was an example of a change preceded by Civil War and 100
years of legal argumentation and in the end it was forced, drastic and
occasionally violent. It altered our traditional view of states rights and
the way we relate to our fellow citizens. And we still have Platt grumbling
about the injustice of it all out of one side of his mouth and ordering an
entire nation to the polls at gun point out of the other.
