I was thinking more along the lines of free necessities being provided 
to inmates at the cost of their liberty, whether prisons or state run
asylums. But, I agree with you about gratitude. I often wonder, "Where
is the gratitude from recepients of the billions of tax dollars spent
on welfare?" Or even from the Katrina refugees? Mostly you hear griping.
There are far too many people who believe the world owes them a living or
that if someone has more than they do, he must have cheated (or in the
case of woman, slept her way to the top). Yes, teaching gratitude is indeed
a tough one. Funny though. You can't be grateful and depressed at the same
time.
