Ian, Micah, Arlo et al.,
What I find ironic is that one can be selfish whether or not one helps a stranger!
Non-helping cases:
N1) I don't help a stranger even though she is greatly benefitted at a minimal cost to me. (selfish)
N2) I don't help a stranger because a minimal benefit to her costs me a great deal. (not selfish)
Helping cases:
H1) I help a stranger only to seek celebrity, reward or some benefit specific to me. (selfish)
H2) I help a stranger to promote a society in which people are generally helpful, respectful, etc., though I am not benefitted more than the average/random person. (?)
H3) I help a stranger irrespective of any benefit to me. (unselfish)
