Hi
I was standing tonight in the cold night waiting
for the dog, and then those stars, glimmering in the
sky. My attention was caught. When was the last time
I was so wrapped up about a fox.
The story of a fox. Walking in the dark night,
tip toeing around, with a quiet effort. I can't hear
it, but it's out there. I feel it. Walking in the
darkness, no moon to light the path. The stars shine
from distances so great, and yet the light is just
enough to notice the trees standing before me. I hear
the trot. I hear the paws upon the autumn leaves.
The earth is breathing a soil that clears the nose,
sniffing the steps of a deer that passed by here. The
little ones grown older now. Winter will be coming.
A whole life to live still. I've got things to do,
places to go. The shallow breeze humbles the leaves,
and some fall before me and the fur. Zig-Zagging
around the circular trees. I hear a sound. Ears
focus in. I sniff the air. Closer do I walk, slowly,
slowly, I pull my mind upon the sound. Closer I walk,
feeling my breath. The chest heaves, and the muscles
are felt holding my body above the earth, as the
stars, the night, the cold air, and shhhhh, the sound,
again. The door swings open. I see the figure from
behind the leaves sheltering me. He lets loose
another one. Upon a rope that one goes down a hill.
The much taller one, he stands looking up at the stars
the breath from his mouth is seen as the lights from
inside shine upon him. Then inside they both go.
Walking about, I have things to do, places to go.
Such a story this earth and sky are. Such a
metaphysics traced by this story.
A fox in the night, upon seeing a man and his
dog. This metaphysics is alive. This reality, this
way of life, has a stream as well, but that will flow
on its own for now as sleep comes to me; and a fox
motions in this story that cannot keep the cold air
from tingling the intellect.
Good Night,
SA
