I think we've had a similar discussion before.
On the historical side, I think people have been treated as chattle whenever someone could get away with it.  It's not a modern malady as the history of warfare or fuedalism shows.  In fact, I think things are getting better.  People (especially women) are seen more as ends & not just means.  See the Geneva Conventions on warfare & the UN Declaration of Human Rights.
On the liguistic side, you see language as constraining the possibilities of what we think.  I see language as providing for the maximum possible ways of thinking.
