Totally as an aside to your post to Ben, I thank you for making another
argument for my case to rename the intellectual level the "individual"
level. The clear implication of your statement is that collective state
interests can never be based on or attain intellectual quality.

Actually, Arlo does not confuse the "state" with the "collective
consciousness of all communicating mankind". Intellectual level patterns,
such as calculus or the MOQ, emerge from the historical-dialectically
generated activity of individuals participating in the collective milieu
(or as Pirsig refers to it, the collective consciousness of all
communicating mankind). The "state" is not this, but rather a formalized
system of governing human activity.
