Ah, right David - I see the confusion ... as usual I used some scare
quotes (around "elitism") when I interjected ...

I mean elitism within what is basically some form of free democracy to
start with, not an exclusive either / or.

I say "some form" because democracies come in all shapes and sizes,
and they are the worst form of governance except for all the other
forms as someone (Churchill ?) once said. Within all that variety of
forms it seems (intellectually)valuable to work out how the wise get
more clout. You may recall we had a one-man-one-vote debate on FoW -
and I got thoroughly kicked in the teeth for even suggesting
consideration of any other other possibility - so well yeah, equal
suffrage, but popular elections cannot possibly make all significant
decisions affecting the population.
