Hi Ron

Thank you for writing! I've been thinking about Arlo's message concerning
motorcycles and how I'm too leery to ride any longer (though I did ride for
years and years) due to the increase in traffic. How odd (I think to myself)
that I think nothing of walking into the remote mountains for days on end
with no weapons and little food where one careless slip could mean my life
yet I'm too nervous to ride. I guess it has to do with control.

I don't mean that I can control the weather but if I prepare properly
(sub-zero sleeping bag, long johns, an extra lighter, great peace of mind) I
have no fear whatsoever out there in the wilderness. Big cats, wolves, and
bears don't bother me a bit. Snakes? No problem. On the other hand, that old
lady talking on her cell phone who nearly rear-ended me scares the hell
right out of me.

I have no doubt that I could survive indefinitely in those mountains, if
push came to shove. But on the highway? Not a chance.

That's why I go. To die.

Perhaps.

Thank you again for writing,

Dan
