Dan,
I'm a Sunday rider mostly, I'm fortunate enough to live close to open
farmland, those mornings are that
Little Piece of the mountain, the danger is about equal, like you I
tread with caution, a subtle heads up
Game, but I seldom walk in the wildernes without atleast a good stick, I
carry a hunk of teakwood and a buck
Knife, nothing serious, but you never know, it's better to have it and
not need it than to need it and not have it.
I encountered a pack of dogs and they tree'd me. lucky for me a few deer
stirred up and they took off after them
The idea of being eaten alive is a rough one..I usually carry a side arm
If I'm "really" out there. But that's me.
-with care

Hi Ron
Thank you for writing! I've been thinking about Arlo's message
concerning motorcycles and how I'm too leery to ride any longer (though
I did ride for years and years) due to the increase in traffic. How odd
(I think to myself) that I think nothing of walking into the remote
mountains for days on end with no weapons and little food where one
careless slip could mean my life yet I'm too nervous to ride. I guess it
has to do with control.
I don't mean that I can control the weather but if I prepare properly
(sub-zero sleeping bag, long johns, an extra lighter, great peace of
mind) I have no fear whatsoever out there in the wilderness. Big cats,
wolves, and bears don't bother me a bit. Snakes? No problem. On the
other hand, that old lady talking on her cell phone who nearly
rear-ended me scares the hell right out of me.
I have no doubt that I could survive indefinitely in those mountains, if
push came to shove. But on the highway? Not a chance.

That's why I go. To die.

Perhaps.
Thank you again for writing,
