Hi Kevin,
The Buddha used intellectual arguments to dissolve social static patterns  
inherent in his culture. A further step is then to dissolve static patterns  
altogether directing one to direct experience.
I think this process may be fairly described as mystical awareness stemming  
from intellectual explanations.
