Thanks for pointing out this clarification.  It makes a huge difference.
Cause and effect connotes interaction.  Patterns and preferences indicate
status.  So in going from ZAMM to Lila it sounds like Pirsig's perspective
on Quality changed from seeing it as an event  to seeing it as value states.
 
The paradoxes I shared all speak to transformation from one value state to
another.
 
     From weakness (adversity) comes strength. 
     We forgive to be forgiven. 
     We give it away to keep it. 
     We suffer to get well. 
     We surrender to win. 
     We die to live. 
     From darkness comes light. 
     From dependence we found independence.
 
>From the perspective of the value states there is no meaning here.  They're
actually quite silly.
 
But from the perspective of interaction, experience and life there is powerful
meaning.
