Dear Heather,
I've been a silent audience to this august group discussing Mr. Pirsig's brilliant ideas with such intensity. I hope my humble opinions which I am going to share with you make a point.
I think it's very important to emphasize the point that people don't "Realize" anything (at least not in the spiritual realm) intellectually. This realization has to transcend intellect (at the very least in the written form or as is commonly understood these days), since intellect is an artificial construct (based on syntax that is artificial).
A realization of Chi (Qi) based on physical/energetic experience (experiential knowledge) is superior and works at levels beyond the capabilities of what we call the intellect.
The Taoists, Tantrics, Yogis, etc have always recommended experiential realization as the true medium. Chi can be talked about for hours but even the slightest experience of it will dispel all misconceptions about what it really is. Dharma (Tao) is also that. As is said in the Tao-te-ching, "The Tao that can be named is not the real Tao".
Regards,
Dwai
