Didn't they pick up certain stuff from the Greeks via the Muslims?
I'd suggest we need to deal with lots oif content here, some of it is
usefully called intellectual.Then we have secularism, reason, science,
empiricism, SOM, historicism, evolution, existentialism, democracy, etc, 
etc.
