At 12:59 PM 11/16/2007, Dan told the Zen story:

>A cat who lived at a monastary developed the annoying habit of
>jumping upon the head roshi's lap each time he sat down to meditate.
>Aggravated, one day he told a monk, "Tie up that pesky cat so we can
>meditate in peace!" The monk did as he was told and each time before
>the meditation took place, the monk dutifully tied up the cat.
>
>Years later when the cat died the monastary acquired another cat to
>tie up while the meditation was going on. Even after the old head
>roshi himself passed away, the monks continued the practice of tying
>up the cat so they could better meditate. Centuries later, many
>learned theses were written on the value of tying up a cat prior to
>meditation.

>Thanks again,

Dan,

Perfect story! I read a little book, The Social Construction of
Reality: A Treatise in the Sociology of Knowledge by Peter L. Berger
and Thomas Luckmann. It tells the same story, but not as well.
