Peter,

When my husband died, "our" friends all disappeared.  My mother 
wanted me to take up golf.  My stepfather suggested I join the church 
to find a nice man.  My daughter told me I should find a retired 
lawyer and settle down.  My son was busy.  When I found some friends, 
they were always fighting with each other.

In India, I believe at a certain age you're entitled to go off into a 
cave to search for other things.
