SA: Here's an example of beauracacy: Where I now
work, in retail, the stores are corporate and do well
across the country, but nobody beats wal-mart, I
think, but this corporation I work at does well.
But... yes, but, this particular store I work at isn't
meeting sells that much and when it does the margins
are close. I know the profit margins and numbers from
a semi-mandatory daily talk that gives this
information to all the employees. Well, many in the
store are looking to blame others for the profit
shortage. Especially the higher ups. It is because
people are not pushing the ads or having their shelves
stocked correctly, etc... Why is it the employees?
Well, because all the other stores are doing well, why
not ours? If we do our job like all the other stores
then surely this store will so good, for this
corporate store is popular and a good store, so, it
can't have anything to do with the corporate store
itself and its' practices. It's because the employees
are not following the best practices that the
corporate stores follow. Yet, it makes sense that the
store is not doing well because we aren't selling
enough products. If we don't meet sales, then the
payroll, meaning, employees hours get cut. If hours
get cut, the same amount of work still has to be done,
but with less work hours. No overtime given out - you
can get fired for eating into overtime too much, too
consistently. (Luckily I'm in a position that the
hours don't get cut, yet, but that would probably mean
the store is going under). Ok, so we're not selling
enough products, not making sales, so hours are
getting cut, but same amount of work needs to be done.
So now everybody's rushed to get their work done, and
if you don't then the higher ups come down on you as
not getting the job done, it's your responsibility,
and why, why, why! But if you try to say anything
about the work hours they say - "Get it done." Ok,
they are under pressure too. For they don't get
annual raises, which they didn't this last time, if
the store isn't selling enough products and meeting
all the daily work tasks. Well, the store isn't
meeting the work tasks due to all the work that needs
done with the handful of people present to do the work
- get it. Here we go loop d loop, here we go loop d
la, here we go loop d lo, dadadada - da... da.
So, why aren't sales up? Well, as said, the
dogma of this particular corporation states it must be
the employees for all the other stores are doing well.
So, when sales are met, they congratulate everybody
for doing a good job in their pushing the ads and
helping the guests find products. True... nothing
wrong with this mentality, but... yes but, if people
are not filling up the parking lot in the first place,
it doesn't matter what we do in the store, and at this
point we're running around like crazy trying to get a
three person job finished. Well, that's retail, which
is what I hear from employees that have been in that
line of work for a long time. So, corporation will
push their dogma, and they'll speak their talking
points, over and over again for that's all they have
to offer - talking points, over and over again.
