It's weekend and I have retreated to the family computer that lacks my 
books (it also lacks posts in the "Where was Quality ..." thread so I 
have to use this one) Anyway, if my memory serves me (as the 
surgeon said) Pirsig opens with listing the opponents to metaphysics 
writing and here "the mystics" figure as the staunchest.   

About doing harm, what good is it that this small group hails Pirsig  
when the MOQ in its orthodox interpretation will be the laughing stock 
of academy if it ventures outside this circle. While the SOL explanation 
makes it the way it was meant to be and immune to attacks. Test it!

This does not fit the analogy at all. ZAMM's point is that the 
Gravitational explanation of thing's tendency to fall was born with 
Newton, thus the Quality explanation of existence was born with Pirsig. 
This you can't circumvent and I don't find it the least problematic. After 
Newton gravity has always existed and after Pirsig Quality has aways 
existed. But I see your frustration that the MOQ isn't merely a theory 
but the very Quality Reality .. as it was ment to be by ZAMM, but 
squandered by LILA.
