Hi Bo,
>>> Steve quotes RMP from LC:
>>> "45. After the beginning of history inorganic, biological, social
>>> and intellectual patterns are found existing together in the same
>>> person. I think the conflicts mentioned here are intellectual
>>> conflicts in which one side clings to an intellectual justification
>>> of existing social patterns and the other side intellectually
>>> opposes the existing social patterns..."

Bo:
> I don't know what "problem" he refers to but "intellectual
> justification of
> existing social patterns" sounds weird. As Pirsig says a person
> consists of all levels (at least in the Western world) and the
> intellect
> will under no circumstances "justify" any social patterns.
It's only because of your SOL interpretation that this sounds weird.
If you think of the levels as types of patterns of value this makes
perfect sense.
Here is an example of Pirsig describing the role of intellect:
From Lila...
"And this is a war in which intellect, to end the paralysis of
society, has to know
whose side it is on, and support that side, never undercut it. Where
biological values are undermining social values, intellectuals must
identify social behavior, no matter what its ethnic connection, and
support
it all the way without restraint. Intellectuals must find biological
behavior, no matter what its ethnic connection, and limit or destroy
destructive biological patterns with complete moral ruthlessness, the
way a
doctor destroys germs, before those biological patterns destroy
civilization itself."

Steve
