mel:  I guess it all depends on where you stand in the 
spectrum of politics and the social.  To me, anyone in 
office at the Federal level is either Classical or Progressive
Liberal, so I don't find it a highly helpful distinction.

Do we end up with a Faith-based socialism that
looks like the Fundamentalist LDS community
or an anti-faith based socialism that looks like 
the most misguided university example of 
Political Correctness gone all Groupthink?

Both seem low-quality static examples of
Social trying to dominate the possibility of 
any dynamic.  I'd rather go towards neither
position and let people form their own 
local or sub-communities...even virtual ones
like this.

It comes down to the actions of individuals and the 
determination to support those actions.  Folks convinced
of their own 'righteous' opinions are often so lacking
in respect of others that they are willing to force the
matter, for everyones own good--of course,  so any 
tactic is acceptable to win.  

Just look at the fluffer mouthpieces used by the
two stripes of Liberalism:  
Michael Moore and Ann Coulter
(a pair of bookends--I'd pay to see what rude litter 
they'd whelp.)

God or Un-god, help us.
