Hi Joe,
I'm not sure if I get the overall meaning of what you are saying. Thanks for
your interpretation of the Awareness/ Conceptualising distinction. In some
ways, some of the things I said in the post to which you responded were a
reaction to endless (potential) quibbling about exactly what is what and
what it is certainly not etc.
Having said this however, I am beginning to realise and appreciate the need
for clarity about the levels of morality as developed by Pirsig. This is why
I joined this discussion group. Indeed reading the posts increases my
awareness that Pirsig is by no means very clear on what is included where
and where the boundaries are. There appears to be lots of room for overlap
especially concerning "Man".
As he says about Lila (p 142 of my Bantham Press hardcover copy) "...is a
cohesion of changing patterns of this Quality...the words Lila uses, the
thoughts she thinks, the values she holds, are the end product of three and
a half billion years of the history of the entire world.
Accepting this we can see that the struggle of which level dominates what
level is still going on. The social-biological codes and the
intellectual-social codes of morals are still battling it out. And whilst
writing this I realise there is overlap i.e there are 5 codes of morality.
Now for clarity on the 4 levels (about 2 of which there appears general
agreement i.e. the inorganic and biological ??).
Cheers Andre
