"From a static point of view socialism is more moral than capitalism. It's a higher form of evolution. It is an intellectually guided society, not just a society that is guided by mindless traditions.” (“Lila”, Chap. 17)
I think it is significant that Pirsig refers to “capitalism” & not to the “free market/free enterprise”.
It could be interlocking corporate Boards of Directors, off-shore corporate headquarters that avoid legal responsibility & taxes, ”independent” auditors that double as corporate insiders, etc. that he objects to.

> the market is a social level pattern at its core

The market has a social part: money, contracts, property rights.
But the decisions need not be “guided by mindless traditions”.
They could be decisions based on intellectual judgment.
But even more important is the fact that capitalism & socialism
can co-exist. Israel has free enterprise & kibbutz; the U. S.
has free markets along side Amish communities, Amerindian reservations
 & hippie communes.
Why choose just one economic system, force everyone into it
& prohibit all other systems? Why not let each person choose which system they want?
