manichean dualisms like god and the devil are useful for controlling people. look at rome. look at the US.

of course the archetype of the devil has a few meanings. pan/dionysius/green man is one of them - nature spirit. the demonisation of pan in this sense is the demonisation of nature (necessary prelude to raping it for profit).

i think faust is important here too: the devil is the subtle voice of greed, power, knowledge that seduces the intellectual seeker away from the path of truth (knowledge instead of truth).

and also blake - the marriage of heaven and hell. and dante of course. and orpheus. in short the only way to heaven is through hell. hell is the place where the ego dies and the individual is born. 

the devil is a very interesting chap....or lass. mythically potent and ironic: the devil works by seducing/tricking one into hell, which is necessary for the individuation process. ie even when he lies cheats and steals the devil is still in your corner.
