The bad side to that, is that it's hard to strike out on your own and
soar above the rest, the good side is that the close knit clan is
there to catch you if you fall.

Dare I say "balance"? "Harmony"? Pirsig did say that the present
movement in Western Culture is a slow drift back towards Victorian
staticity; the domination of social over intellectual value. They
wanted everything tidy and orderly and neat and uniform; workers
arranged in manageable rows, schoolkids sitting quiet and properly
waiting for the teacher to instruct them... bookstores deliberately
uniform from coast to coast. I've often heard the same thing about
the popularity of "chain" restaurants; you know what you're gonna
get, that plate of pasta will be exactly identical to the plate of
pasta you had at this chain in Orlando or Seattle. No confusion. No surprise.
